Operation Safed Sagar: Netflix Takes Flight with the Untold Air Story of the Kargil War

Netflix India’s official trailer for Operation Safed Sagar: The Untold Story of the Kargil War soars with intensity, capturing the high-stakes world of fighter pilots navigating the world’s highest air operation. Released in July 2026, the trailer builds anticipation for the six-episode series that premiered on August 7, 2026. It focuses on the Indian Air Force’s pivotal yet lesser-told role during the 1999 Kargil War, centering on the Golden Arrows Squadron.

The Mission That Defied the Odds

In the summer of 1999, as Pakistani forces occupied strategic mountain positions along the Line of Control, the Indian Army faced a brutal high-altitude fight. Operation Safed Sagar—meaning “White Ocean”—was the Indian Air Force’s response: a campaign of strike, reconnaissance, escort, and support missions flown at extreme altitudes over the snow-capped Himalayas. The series dramatizes this chapter through the Golden Arrows (No. 17 Squadron), one of the IAF’s youngest fighter units, who rose to the challenge under near-impossible conditions.

At the heart of the story are Wing Commander B.S. Dhanoa “Tony” (Jimmy Shergill) and Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja (Siddharth). Ahuja, a real-life officer who made the ultimate sacrifice, trains and leads a group of young pilots—including Flying Officer R.S. Dhaliwal “Dhali” (Abhay Verma), Flying Officer C.H. Bal Reddy “Baldy” (Mihir Ahuja), Flight Lieutenant Jitendra Sangwan “Sangy” (Taaruk Raina), and Flying Officer Amit Gupta “Goofy” (Arnav Bhasin). They confront technical limitations of aging aircraft, enemy surface-to-air threats, life-and-death decisions, and the weight of national duty while supporting ground forces reclaiming the heights.

The trailer sets the tone with cockpit tension, Mayday calls, mountains that leave no room for error, and the urgency of a mission that must cross the peaks to succeed. It also touches on the human side—pilots, their families, and the camaraderie that holds them together—alongside the political undercurrents of the conflict.

Authenticity at Scale

Directed by Oni Sen and created by Abhijeet Singh Parmar and Kushal Srivastava (an ex-IAF officer), the series was produced by Matchbox Shots and Feel Good Films. Netflix has described it as one of its most ambitious Indian productions. Filmmakers received unprecedented access to active Air Force bases, operational MiG-21 and Mirage 2000 jets, and extensive consultation with veterans and families of those involved. Filming reached altitudes near 16,000 feet, with large-scale visual effects crafted by more than a thousand local artists to recreate aerial combat sequences.

The ensemble also includes Dia Mirza, Prajakta Koli, Adil Hussain, Amrita Bagchi, and others, bringing depth to both the squadron’s personal stories and the broader strategic picture.

Why It Matters

Most portrayals of the Kargil War have centered on the Army’s ground battles for peaks like Tololing and Tiger Hill. Operation Safed Sagar shifts the focus skyward, highlighting the precision, innovation, and sacrifice required to operate at altitudes where engines, weapons, and human endurance were pushed to their limits. Early reactions to the trailer and series praise the VFX, performances (especially Siddharth and Jimmy Shergill), and the rare spotlight on the IAF’s contribution.

All six episodes are now streaming exclusively on Netflix. For viewers drawn to military history, high-stakes drama, and stories of ordinary people performing extraordinary duty, Operation Safed Sagar delivers a powerful, grounded tribute to the Golden Arrows and the air warriors who helped turn the tide in 1999.
